Top 15 awesome & easy ways to show gratitude & brighten your day

gratitude is the sign of noble souls

Being thankful is something we should all be but gratitude isn’t a common habit. Let’s face it, how many times do you stop during the busy work day to think of all the things you are grateful for? But without gratitude, life can feel harder and more negative. Pausing just for a moment to think about all the positive things in your life can perk up your attitude for the rest of the day. Gratitude is good. Gratitude is free, enjoyable, effective and just a small moment can change your day. So why not practice a little gratitude each day. Here are my top 15 ways to bring Gratitude Pauses into your every day life.

  1. Be grateful for the little things – Seems obvious right? But how often do we take the little things for granted. Things like…When you wake up in a panic because you think you are late but actually you have an extra 30 minutes in bed. The smell of a good cup of coffee. Receiving a compliment from a co-worker, or even someone just saying “you’re doing really well’.
  2. Write it down – Before you go to bed write down a few things you have been grateful for during the day. Why not start a Gratitude journal? Doing it before you go to sleep helps lighten your mood and will help you sleep a little easier.
  3. Tell people – Send an email of thanks, write a thank you note, give someone a hug and say thank you. People aren’t mind readers, tell them you are thankful. It makes you feel good and brightens their day too!
  4. Go for a walk – Go for a walk and as you do allow your mind to clear so you can focus on things you are grateful for.
  5. Write a ‘Thank Me’ list – Write a list for all the things that you are good at, things you enjoy doing and your achievements. Not only is this a fabulous way to be grateful for yourself but it will boost your confidence too!
  6. Try not to complain too much – Although at times complaining is completely necessary, try not to complain at the little things. Complaining not only brings you down and the other person down but it is the opposite of gratitude. However, if you do have to complain about something (and yes, sometimes you really do have to complain), be grateful for when the the situation is rectified.
  7. Write a positive review – Had great customer service? Bought a product that was amazing? Write a positive review for a business to show your gratitude. This helps make you feel better and also could do wonders for a small business.
  8. Don’t make comparisons – Stop comparing yourself to other people. Be thankful for who you are right now.
  9. Donate your time – Volunteering whether in person or virtually is a great way to show your appreciation and to give something back.
  10. Show off your gifts – If someone has taken the time to make or buy you something, show it off! Pop a post on Facebook, or wear that hand knitted jumper. Pop pictures on the fridge or even share a photo of you wearing those lovely new earrings. No matter how you do it, it’s lovely to show some thanks for the things people make or buy you.
  11. Be present – Show your appreciation to someone by being present with them. Listen to what they have to say, be patient, be kind, be in the moment with them.
  12. Celebrate others achievements – Sometimes jealousy gets in the way but truly celebrating someone else allows you to free up the head space that would normally be caused by your own pity party as you wallow in envy. So suck it up and celebrate others too.
  13. Saying you are sorry – There is a well known phrase “You can be right or you can be happy” and sometimes, being happy is by far the better option. Saying sorry, even if you feel the other person maybe in the wrong, shows that you appreciate their friendship more than the right to win an argument.
  14. Be grateful for the negative – You know whatever you have been through makes you who you are now. And some negative experiences and challenges make you fight, make you stronger and make you more determined. Finding gratitude in these hard times is sometimes impossible but if one small positive thing comes out of a negative situation then hold on to that.
  15. Smile – Right now take a deep breath and smile. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, just stop and take a deep breath and smile. You have a lot to be thankful for even if you can’t see it right at this moment, so take that deep breath… and smile. Smiling is also contagious so spread a smile today.

So why not give these ideas a try. Be mindful of how you feel and be thankful for all the little things.
